One of the things I learned in late 2022 was the definition of impact, from a friend. Of course they simplified it for me to understand better. Impact is defined as the effect it has, many a times on people, when that thing is taken away. Now that helps me look at the world with a clearer lens. Did I make an “impact”? I think I have a better way to measure – “If that thing is taken away, does that affect people?” This is the way I wing by now, one can extrapolate it for positive and negative impacts.
Next up is a list of fancy English words I picked up towards the end from friends, series and songs. The first one up is –
Hubris – (adj.) too much proud, tending towards arrogance.
First heard it in the song, Devil Doesn’t Bargain, by Alec Benjamin, “It’s useless, don’t do this, it’s hubris to try” and then I saw it again in the new Netflix series – Wednesday, it’s when she asks Tyler for a date and her roommate for a girls night-out for her birthday when the school is under a lockdown. She manipulates both of them to go and see the house in her visions. At the end of the episode, when all the action has happened, Principal Weems says to her “I think contrition might be in order right now, Miss Addams. Not hubris.” (Contrition: penitence, feeling remorseful after doing something wrong or bad).
Pedantic – (adj.) being a show off, in a boring way.
Sublime – (yep it has more meanings than the one with naphthalene balls disappearing at room temperature) (adj) unparalleled excellence
Esoteric – (adj) for an experience, to be understood, only after experiencing. Found it on Reddit, even hard to find the related meaning on Google, it was used for meditation being an esoteric experience.
Quaint – (adj.) I knew this one, but the recent usage brought some poetic memories. Charming in an old fashioned way. One colleague used to describe their Gokarana experience.
I am excited to explore this newest year, I am just happy that apart from a few websites, nothing like a Y2k(23) is not happening. Although you would hear me complain about it all the time about some websites with flawed logics, where the domain of my website expiry date is even before it was bought. It’s funny, still explaining my cancellation to them is a bit hard – “I think you are experience some sort of Y2k bug here”. Unless it’s the curious case of Benjamin Button in a time machine, who apparently buys a website as well.
One of the exciting moments in class, post the new year, were – almost everyone, including me, messing up with the dates, adjusting to type a new number at the end, on the blackboard and in our notebooks at the corner. Although I hated to be that kid, who corrects the teacher on these minute things, still I think it was worth it, because most pupils would just copy as is without thinking and everyone will write it wrong.
An Ode to Twenty Twenty Three
If knowledge were this big pool of ocean,
I am floating across all seven,
In the hopes of finding a Marina Trench,
That attracts to the bench,
Where I will take the dive,
And build my own beehive.
A good little mini poem for the new start.
Cheers,
To New Beginnings,
Calra
P.S. : The title is inspired by a game of Exploding Kittens playing late in the night and my best friend after getting exploded by the kitten trying to sell their combo of “See the Future” and “Skip” cards – “Skip the Future” : D
